Creative Non-Fiction: Reflective and Descriptive Writing (Abrahams-Beckford) SEM 1-2023

As a complement to Expositions and Arguments in the Arts, the course, Creative Non-Fiction: Reflective and Descriptive Writing, provides students with the opportunity to start developing skills for writing at the tertiary level. The course focuses on two specialised modes of writing—Reflective Writing and Descriptive Writing—in order to introduce students to the elements and structure of writing at the tertiary level. The mechanics of these two different types of writing are explored as the students participate in a range of listening, reading, writing and speaking activities to foster the development of their communicative competence and attainment of academic literacies.

Caribbean Culture and Identity - SEC A - KITSON - Sem 2 2023/2024
Year I

This course seeks to introduce students to theories of “Caribbeanness” through the framework of Caribbean Cultural Studies. By engaging this multidisciplinary approach the course highlights major historical, cultural and aesthetical occurrences in the Caribbean. Students are expected to analyse race, class and gender as frames of reference for understanding cultural practices and subsequent power relations. As such, the course also offers students a platform from which to interpret cultural
expressions in its broadest political sense.

Conversational French - Sem 2 | 2023/2024 - DALLAS-GOODE
Year I

The Beginners French course will cover basic grammar rules, pronunciation and vocabulary acquisition.  Students will learn how to interact on a basic level in day-to-day situations with French speakers.  They will also learn about French and Francophone music, art, dance and theatre in the Caribbean Region and around the world. 

The course will be based on the four language skills:  listening, speaking, reading and writing, but greater emphasis will be placed on oral skills. 

English for Life 1 and 2
Year I

This course will immerse students in a variety of experiences designed to facilitate opportunities to communicate effectively in oral or written communication. Each student will be assessed at the beginning of the course, and a careful note of progress recorded in a range of skills including listening, speaking, reading, writing, thinking and researching. Attention will be given to vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Activity will take into account culturally relevant themes and experiences.

Introduction to Spanish I - Sem 1 2023/24
Year I

This course will introduce students to the rudiments of simple sentences in Spanish that will provide basic survival skills in a Spanish environment. The course will facilitate students’ awareness of the social function of the language and how to converse in specific contexts. Underlying the delivery of the course will be the language skills: listening, speaking and to a lesser extent reading and writing.

Fundamentals of Academic Reading and Writing - Sem 2 - 2024 (Brissett)
Year I

The course, Fundamentals of Academic Reading and Writing, introduces students to the skills required for reading and writing at the tertiary level. Students will practice reviewing the structure of paragraphs and essays including thesis statements, topic sentences and supporting evidence; identifying tone, register, and audience of academic writing; writing coherent and cohesive sentences and paragraphs; and integrating source material and avoiding plagiarism; while employing various conventions in the use of grammar, mechanics and vocabulary. Students will engage in comprehension practice and short writing exercises on a weekly basis, using fiction and non-fiction texts.
